Scottish Sunday - Look past the badge and you’ll get top spec for less with a Lacetti, says Phil Vaughan

Motoring: Look past the badge and you’ll get top spec for less with a Lacetti, says Phil Vaughan

IF you’re testing the water for a Focus-sized family hatchback, then do your wallet a favour. Flick through the new-car pricing pages of any respected motoring magazine, and note the prices of, say, half-a-dozen 1.5 or 1.6 litre petrol hatches of equivalent size to the Ford. You are probably looking at a minimum of £12,000 – that’s about right for the mass-market five-doors.

Now look at the price of a Daewoo Lacetti 1.6SX: £10,495. And please don’t trot out the ‘but it’s a Daewoo’ line – you haven’t seen a Daewoo lately if you do, and you most certainly won’t have had sight of the Lacetti’s long specification list.

It starts with air conditioning and a cooled glove box, and stretches to all-electric windows, tinted glass, alloy wheels, powered, heated door mirrors, and six-speaker CD system. In all, there are about 30 comfort and convenience items.

Excellent Value for Money

Locking wheel nuts and remote, keyless entry with central locking back-up the engine immobiliser for security, while passengers are protected by anti-lock brakes, front and side airbags, and full front and side impact-absorbing systems. This value hatchback’s kit haul also includes fully adjusting leather steering wheel, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, and a front armrest.

For now, the only alternative to the 1.6SX is the £9495 1.4 SE, but a potent 1.8-litre petrol engine will appear in a couple of months, with a diesel version expected early next year. The current 1598cc, 108bhp flagship can do 116mph, and has a five-speed manual gearbox (unless you pay £1000 more for the automatic option). The 0-62mph sprint takes 10.7 seconds, and the Lacetti performs adequately across the revs range. A 60-litre fuel tank gives it good motorway legs, with the extra-urban fuel figure standing at 45.6mpg. The ride is refined for comfort, not sportiness, so settle back in the fairly supportive seats, stow any gear in the under-seat tray or many pockets, and enjoy the journey.

Improved Quality and Warranty Packages

The interior and controls are straightforward, and it’s all mastered in seconds. GM Daewoo, which rose from the Daewoo ashes less than two years ago, has the might of General Motors behind it, and has done a fine job of improving the marque’s all-round quality. The fleet buyers may still be fighting shy of the products, but the Lacetti looks set for success in the private buyer sector. It’ll stand up very well against a Nissan Almera, a Toyota Corolla, and the all-pervading Focus, but if you’re still not convinced Daewoo delivers a lot for the money, there’s always the lure of the leading warranty package: three years’/60,000 miles cover, plus free servicing spread across that, and AA recovery on top.

That’s very, very tempting, and Daewoo can now join BMW Mini (£100 tlc servicing package) and Hyundai (five-year cover) on the winning warranty podium. Those three examples tell you that makers are at last realizing that the service bay at the back of the garage is just as important for winning over customers as the fancy showroom at the front.
