The future of the Forth Road Bridge
The new chief engineer of the Forth Road Bridge, Barry Colford, has expressed confidence that the corrosion threatening the bridge's safety can be halted and repairs carried out to keep it open for another century. However, a weight restriction may be required around 2017.

He proposed allocating £100 million to augment or replace the cables on the existing bridge should dehumidification fail. Opposition to the new bridge arises from its inconsistency with the government's environmental policy, as highlighted by Friends of the Earth Scotland and other members of the ForthRight Alliance. Critics claim that a new bridge would not alleviate congestion but rather increase traffic flow and emissions, contradicting the SNP government's commitment to combating climate change.

Transport Scotland, the national transport agency, dismissed the concerns and affirmed that the proposal for another crossing would proceed. A spokesperson asserted that a definitive assessment of the bridge's condition would only be available in 2012 and, therefore, no significant changes had occurred. Despite this, a recent report by Edinburgh Council's transport department challenged the necessity of a new Forth bridge.
