Scottish Sunday: Scottish Filmmakers Tackle Mysterious Marfa Lights in New Road Movie

New Film Explores Mysterious Marfa Lights Phenomenon

To some people, they are the flickering signals of friendly aliens; to others they are just explosions of swamp gas or headlights reflected from a busy highway. But for a team of award-winning Scottish film-makers, the mysterious Marfa Lights, far away in Texas, are the inspiration for an audience-grabbing new film.

An International Collaboration for Scottish Filmmakers

Garfield Kennedy, director of the Emmy-winning 9/11 documentary Why The Towers Fell, is set to produce a road movie revolving around this US mystery, which attracts as many tourists and theories as the Loch Ness monster. The Road To Marfa, written and directed by Robbie McCallum, is being seen as an example of how Scottish filmmakers can access other funding sources and distributors by working in international partnerships.

Plot and Production Details

Currently in development with Raymond Martin, of the Texan firm Raygun Films, The Road To Marfa has already attracted interest from the leading Scottish actor Gary Lewis, and is set to start shooting next year in Texas and New Mexico. A coming-of-age film, it features two young friends, the "low-income slacker" Sam and "internet-rich kid" Toby, who go on a road trip to combat their 20-something apathy and end up travelling to the Marfa Lights.

Mysterious Marfa Lights Phenomenon

The first recorded sighting of the Marfa Lights was in 1883. Scientists have suggested the illuminations are caused by electrostatic discharge, swamp gas, or moonlight shining on veins of mica, a natural, glassy substance. Others believe the Marfa Lights are supernatural. One woman claimed that her father was saved from a blizzard when the "curious observers" led him to the shelter of a cave.

Scottish Filmmakers Eye International Success

Kennedy believes that the new £500,000 film can attract a wide international audience, drawing parallels between the Marfa Lights and the Loch Ness monster, which Scotland could also exploit for profit. While Kennedy is not a believer in the supernatural, he thinks that the audience will be captivated by the mystical ending of the film.

He also shared that Scottish actor Gary Lewis is eager to take on a part as a car dealer if his schedule allows, and they will be approaching other actors like Meatloaf for key roles. The film promises to be an exciting venture for Scottish filmmakers, showcasing their talent and potential for international success.

Astronomer's Perspective

Professor John Brown, Astronomer Royal for Scotland and a professor of physics and astronomy at Glasgow University, mentioned that he has not heard of the Marfa Lights phenomenon specifically. However, he acknowledged that there are various light phenomena, ranging from effects of marsh gases to the reflection of the sun by bright iridium satellites.
