Scottish Sunday: Scottish Firm Motomedia Transforms Empty Shop Windows with Technology

Vacant Shops May Never Be the Same Again

Technology developed by Scottish firm Motomedia may revolutionize the way vacant shops are utilized. The company's innovative technology can transform the windows of an empty shop into a "living, talking advert".

Creating a Unique Shopping Experience

During the London launch of American band LCD Soundsystem's album Sound Of Silver, shoppers were captivated when Motomedia's technology was used. The band's images were projected onto the shop's window panes, effectively turning the entire window into a loudspeaker. The use of sound grabbed the attention of passers-by, who were left wondering where the sound was coming from.

Following this successful trial, Motomedia is now set to bring this unique shopping experience to Glasgow. Virgin has selected Glasgow as one of five locations across the UK where Motomedia's technology will be used to promote the new Chemical Brothers album.

Transforming Empty Spaces

Kenny MacLean, the founder of Motomedia, conceived the idea out of frustration while walking through Glasgow's West End. He noticed numerous expensive billposting sites, while nearby there were empty business units that could be put to good use. MacLean saw the potential to generate additional revenue and breathe new life into these deserted units through his technology.

Motomedia's technology does not replace the importance of leasing an empty unit but offers an opportunity to turn it into a revenue-generating space. This innovative approach resonated with big players in the advertising industry, attracting interest from brands such as Adobe, Baileys Irish Cream, and Captain Morgan.

Measuring Ad Impact

What sets Motomedia apart is the incorporation of state-of-the-art technology that allows advertisers to measure the impact of their ads. By tracking the number of people viewing the ads and the duration of their engagement, advertisers gain valuable insights into consumer behavior. For example, when Motomedia promoted American rap star Mims in London's Shepherd's Bush, the firm estimated that 200,000 people were seeing the advertisement every week.

MacLean emphasizes that he thinks like a retailer rather than a marketer, making the focus all about driving sales. Motomedia also has the capability to recognize the gender of the viewer and tailor the content accordingly, enhancing the personalization aspect of their advertising solutions.

Affordable and Accessible Advertising

The cost of a Motomedia advertisement depends on the client's budget, with location being a key factor. Prices can range from £25,000 for a month-long campaign to £2,000 for a week. MacLean strives to make their advertising solutions affordable and accessible for clients.

Motomedia is best suited for advertising media products, according to MacLean. To further expand their reach, the company is already planning a modified version of their technology called Street Level TV. This new venture will beam TV ads onto shop windows, providing clients with an effortless way to utilize existing content for advertising purposes. The popular TV show, The X Factor, has already signed up to have clips shown advertising the program.
