Blair and Bush Share Spiritual Affinity, Book Reveals

In a new book by David Aikman, the former senior writer of Time magazine, it is revealed that former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and former US President George W Bush shared moments of private prayer during the lead-up to the Iraq war. The book, titled "A Man Of Faith: The Spiritual Journey Of George W Bush," explores the spiritual affinity between the two leaders, which may be a surprising revelation for Blair who has tried to distance himself from being seen as too evangelical, especially in comparison to Bush.

Embarrassment for Blair

Blair's deep-seated fear of being portrayed as a similar type of evangelical Christian as Bush was evident when he reacted angrily during an interview with Newsnight presenter Jeremy Paxman last year when repeatedly asked if he and Bush prayed together. In another interview, when Blair was questioned about his faith by Vanity Fair magazine, his spin doctor, Alastair Campbell, interrupted, saying, "I’m sorry, we don’t do God." These recent revelations about the "spiritual affinity" between Blair and Bush come at a time when Bush's status as a born-again Christian is already under heavy scrutiny in the run-up to the US presidential election.

A Man Of Faith

Aikman's book is based on extensive interviews with some of Bush's closest aides and confidants, including key advisers Karen Hughes and Karl Rove, as well as old friends like Don Evans and Christian pop star Michael W Smith. Aikman also had the opportunity to interview two of Bush's pastors in Texas and even had a conversation with the President's mother, Barbara. According to Aikman, his extensive research and interviews with the inner circle make it clear that Bush and Blair shared a faith connection, praying together at least once. Their shared faith provided a commonality that contributed to their special relationship as conviction politicians.

Authenticity of Bush's Faith

While there are doubts about the authenticity of Bush's faith, especially with upcoming revelations by Kitty Kelley in her book, which alleges drug use and possible involvement in arranging an abortion, Aikman firmly believes that Bush's Christianity is genuine. The White House also expressed delight with Aikman's book, as Bush sent a personal letter to Aikman's daughter on account of her father's work.
