When the underworld is overexposed - Scottish Sunday

Gangster: A Cinematic Exploration of the Underworld

With its high production values, luxuriant running time and expensive licensed music, you got the feeling that dashing investigative journalist Donal MacIntyre really put a lot into Gangster, the first film in his new MacIntyre’s Underworld series. All that was missing was a GoodFellas-style freeze-frame and voiceover: “As far back as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to make a documentary about a gangster.”

MacIntyre spent six months shadowing Manchester crimelord Dominic Noonan, hanging around like a slightly more chippy Louis Theroux. Although Noonan and his faintly ridiculous “crew” were shot with irritating reverence – all swooping crane shots and moody Reservoir Dogs tableaux – when MacIntyre did get round to interviewing his subject, at least his line of questioning was refreshingly direct.

A Surprising Revelation

“I detect a touch of lavender about you, Dominic … when did you realize you were gay?” Not a question most people would put to a gangster while standing in their boxing gym. Noonan’s response was even more amazing; his matter-of-fact account of a series of violent sexual attacks he endured whilst a young teen at boarding school made him disorientatingly sympathetic. You suddenly started feeling for this crushingly uncharismatic and unfunny man, to whom ham-fisted violence and intimidation were second nature.

Although the wild shifts in tone and lack of structure meant the film already lacked coherence, it was further destabilized by the fact that Noonan’s brother (and chief enforcer) Desmond was stabbed to death five days before the broadcast. Although he only appeared briefly, all Desmond’s contributions to the documentary suddenly seemed oddly prophetic; as did all the talk about being untouchable and dying for one’s criminal comrades.

“Anyone who thinks they can take me out should think again,” said Dominic at one point. “No-one wants to hurt us. And if they did, by God, there would be some fireworks.” Perhaps the fireworks will have to wait until after Desmond’s funeral, and MacIntyre – a canny operator – will probably be there to record it for posterity.

Doctor Who: A Family-Friendly Adventure

By the time you read this, you’ll already have made up your own mind about Doctor Who. The BBC can’t be praised enough for having the courage to put it out on Saturday night at 7pm; finally, a decent show the whole family can sit down and watch together. Despite a heavy reliance on shonky CGI effects in the opening episode, Christopher Eccleston’s loopy performance bodes well for the future (and past, and present).

The only thing that didn’t quite chime for me was the new interior of the Tardis, the minimalist and claustrophobic white cockpit of old reimagined as an enormous steel steampunk cavern. You might believe this Victorian-looking furnace could power a police box through time and space … but where does the Doctor actually hang out when he’s not battling Autons? If this was the Tardis’s engine room, I wanted to see the library, the cocktail lounge, the games room. But there’s time yet...
