Scottish Sunday: Arts: Culture - Let’s not talk about sex

On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan (Jonathan Cape, £12.99)

HOW DISTANT the 1960s seem. Significantly, Ian McEwan's new novella is set in 1962, a year before that earmarked by Philip Larkin as the overture to the sexual blitzkrieg. In McEwan's atomic portrayal of unconsummated love it seems another age, as removed from the present time as the pebbles found on Chesil Beach on the Dorset coast. It is against this geologically intriguing phenomenon that love, so carefully and sincerely nurtured, founders, a consequence of things left unsaid, of our endless capacity to suffer embarrassment when it comes to sex.

Mutes and Miscommunication in Literature

From the writer's point of view, the silence surrounding sex has always been a gift. It has been the mainstay of fiction in English since the beginning of the novel, with examples in the work of Jane Austen and Kazuo Ishiguro where thoughts and speech rarely connect. For centuries in Britain, congress between inexperienced members of both sexes was like playing tennis in the pitch dark - very hit or miss. In McEwan's novella, the muteness surrounding sex adds to the magnificent, awful, and sometimes hilarious consequences.

The Changing Landscape of Sexual Repression

It may seem implausible to members of a younger generation, but not so long ago, sex was not as ubiquitous as it is today. The 1960s marked a significant shift in societal attitudes towards sex. Television, still influenced by Lord Reith, was highly sanitized, and public displays of sexuality were limited. The novella's setting in 1962 captures the last gasp of an era when sex was generally forbidden until after marriage, and the novel's protagonists, Edward and Florence, exemplify the sexual naivety of their time.

The Unraveling of Unconsummated Love

Edward and Florence's courtship in On Chesil Beach is a slow and deliberate affair, bound by unspoken protocols. Both characters are intelligent but lack knowledge of biological functions. When faced with the prospect of sex, their inability to communicate leads to a disastrous wedding night. McEwan masterfully plays with his readers' patience by withholding information until the moment of truth. The story explores not only fear, timidity, and squeamishness, but also touches on themes of Englishness, class, and history.

The Consequences of Suppressed Desire

The novella's denouement reveals the far-reaching consequences of Edward and Florence's failed attempt at consummation. Both characters become victims of their own repression, and their lives are forever impacted by the events that unfold on their wedding night. McEwan does not shy away from addressing the topic directly, maintaining his signature blend of courtly language and avoiding crudity. The story ultimately serves as a poignant exploration of the effects of sexual repression and the lasting scars it can leave.
