Immigration still greatest challenge for McCain Huge gulf between Hispanics and conservatives threatens Republican campaignFrom Andrew Purcell
in New York IMMIGRATION, THE issue which almost killed John McCain's candidacy before it began, is threatening his US presidential ambitions again. The gulf between Republican rhetoric and Hispanic expectations has never been wider. Somehow, though, he must walk a wire between the two.
Based on his voting record, McCain is as progressive on immigration as Barack Obama. He has consistently supported the creation of a path to citizenship for people who have entered the US illegally, in tandem with a guest worker programme. To many in his own party this "amnesty" is a dirty word.
In his re-election, George Bush won 40% of the Hispanic vote. McCain needs to match that, particularly in the south-west. In New Mexico, almost a third of the electorate is Spanish-speaking. In Nevada and Colorado the percentage is lower, but still potentially decisive. At the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), an influential Hispanic rights organisation, Obama stated flatly that "the Latino community holds the election in its hands".
McCain delivered his pitch to the NCLR the next day, reminding it that "at a moment of great difficulty in my campaign, when my critics said it would be political suicide for me to do so, I helped author with Senator Kennedy comprehensive immigration reform."
The McCain-Kennedy Bill, or the Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act, was never voted on in the Senate, partly because of the implacable opposition of homeland security hardliners, but also because it proved politically unpopular.
CNN anchor Lou Dobbs made illegal immigration his signature issue and scored the highest ratings on the network. The lesson learned by the Republicans was that in discussing the nation's porous borders, no talk is too tough.
Presidential debates were shaped by the agenda of Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo, who believes that every undocumented worker in America should be deported. Mitt Romney, a fellow contender for the Republican candidacy, described McCain's proposed legislation as "offensive" and attacked Rudy Giuliani for running a "sanctuary city" in New York.
By the Iowa caucus, McCain had realised his position on immigration was untenable. "I got the message," he told voters in Sheldon. "We have to do what's necessary to secure our border, and then we can move on to other aspects of the problem."
By formulating his policy this way - border first, reform second - McCain hopes to reassure conservatives without alienating Hispanic-Americans.
Presenting it to the two constituencies is a delicate business. When he told the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials that reform "will be my top priority yesterday, today and tomorrow," it caused outrage on conservative blogs.
Tancredo wrote McCain an open letter asking: "Are you planning to break a promise you made in February to postpone all other immigration reform legislation until we have first secured our borders?"
In Chicago, he addressed a closed meeting of Hispanic community leaders, unaware that one of them, Rosanna Pulido, was from the Minuteman Project, a controversial vigilante group which patrols the zone between the US and Mexico.
Pulido later told the Associated Press: "He's one John McCain in front of white Republicans. And he's a different John McCain in front of Hispanics I'm outraged that he would reach out to me as a Hispanic but not as a conservative."
Immigration ranks only fifth in the electoral concerns of Latino voters. In a Pew Hispanic Centre poll last year, 79% of people surveyed described it as a "very important" or "extremely important" issue, but put it behind education, healthcare, the economy and crime. Iraq was sixth.
McCain is presenting himself as a social conservative who has fought alongside Hispanic-Americans for his country. He often talks about refusing early release from a PoW camp in Vietnam because "my beloved friend Everett Alvarez, a brave American of Mexican descent, had been shot down years before I was".
A recent radio commercial featured his Naval Academy room-mate, Frank Gamboa, telling listeners in Spanish that McCain "shares our conservative values and faith in God" and "knows that family is the most important thing we have and that we value hard work".
During the Democratic primaries, Obama sometimes found it difficult to win Hispanic votes. But that was against Hillary Clinton, who had spent decades fostering links with the community. The Clintons are still the strongest brand in Hispanic-American politics.
The Republican Party brand, traditionally popular with Cubans but few other Latinos, has been further compromised by the openly xenophobic tone of the immigration debate.
In the latest hypothetical presidential election match-up, carried out by CBS and the New York Times, Obama leads McCain among Hispanic voters by 62% to 23%. McCain must do better than that to avoid being swept away in the southwest. He is the only Republican who could close the gap, but he will have one hand tied behind his back by Tom Tancredo.

Besides immigration, McCain has a lot of other challenges. He doesn't really excite conservative Republicans and one wonders just how hard they'll work for him. He is a poor speaker, and always appears drained of energy. Then there's the fact that Americans seem ready for a change from the Republicans, largely because of President Bush. It should be a shoo-in for Obama, but will likely be a closer race than the (already drooling) Democrats are anticipating.

Rosanna Pulido poses as a conservative Republican, but in fact is a paid staffer for the anti-immigrant group FAIR - John McCain was set up. This extreme group is financed by white supremicists, who cannot stomach that a moderate Republican on immigration issues might ascend to the Presidency. FAIR would rather scorch the earth and burn "Juan" McCain then see a principled conservative in the White House.
McCain (and Bush) had the right idea - Latinos are patriotic, hard-working, entreprenuerial, and faithful. They OUGHT to be Republicans, except that idiots like Tancredo and Pulido keep attacking their family members!
This racial blindness will cost McCain the presidency.

McCain's character was revealed by the Charles Keating affair. He hasn't changed. He will say whatever he thinks will garner him votes. He will do whatever his paymasters tell him to do. He changes his position as a chameleon changes color.

Its time McCain and Obama start pandering to the American people, not the illegal alien supporters. We just become angrier and more frustrated by both of these candidates, both of whom are not qualified to be President. It is a sad state of affairs in this country when we cannot nominate someone who truly is looking out for the best interests of his/her country and citizens. I am sick of both of them. God bless and help America. We need to get rid of all these politicians and start over.

Latinos have high dropout rates from school, score

Why in God's green earth would any Republican want to vote for Juan McCain? Oh, yes... He's white.
Well, so are Bob Barr and Charles Baldwin and both are better conservatives than Juan McCain.

To set "Seeing Red" straight, FAIR is not anti-immigrant, it's anti-[bold]ILLEGAL[/bold] immigrant. These illegal aliens should not be able to cha-cha across our southern border and get amnesty while it takes years for anyone else to do it the legal way. There's certainly no incentive for abiding by the law in that case. And John McCain is no "principled conservative". He's as liberal as Obama! We are blessed to have people like Tom Tancredo!

By voting for the lesser of two evils (McCain or Obama), we are still voting for evil. For all those who proclaim the need for a 3rd party, this upcoming election is the opportunity to let both the DNC & the RNC know that we, the people, will no longer allow a party, Mexico or LaRaza, or the Council on Foreign Relations decide who will run our country. A vote for Chuck Balwin, Bob Barr, or anyone other than the designated party nominees will send that message and, in time, allow a strong 3rd party to emerge.

Neither candidate actually speaks for the majority of America's Citizens on the issue of illegal immigration and immigration reform. They are both pandering to a small population of voters simply because partisanship has forced the election to be so close that either candidate might win or lose by a few votes. This isn't an indication of the broad support for either candidate, but rather it reflects how little America's Citizens care anymore about trying to elect any candidate. It seems that no matter who we elect, our views, values and interests are of little concern when an elected candidate reaches office. Indeed, all these arguments in favor of the Barr's, or the Baldwin's sho how desperate we, the people are, for a candidate that will listen to our demands. It's tragic that this issue of illegal immigration may be the one issue that is responsible for the revolt of America's Citizen's. Unfortunately, it appears that neither party is taking the concerns of America's Citizens seriously, and such may be the cause of our overturning a government that no longer represents our interests. Overwhelmingly, America's Citizens support securing our borders and enforcinging our immigration laws. We oppose amnesty, guest worker programs, and a path to citizenship. Only an idiot can suggest that there is any broad national mandate for amnesty or a path to citizenship, when time after time, state after state, city after city, we've seen local citizens and elected officials state the exact opposite! Only a moron can assert that nationally America's Citizens support amnesty or a path to citizenship, or increases in Visa's when we've seen no such support at the state or local levels. All politics is local! If Citizens are demanding employer sanctions and stricter enforcement, and denial of benefits and social services at the state and local level, it's ridiculous to suggest that there is any substantial support for "normalizing" our illegal alien population through other than enforcement and deportation.
Too many people competing for the same limited resources cannot be considered sound economic, environmental, social or cultural policy! It's time that we, the people took matters into our own hands if government continues to ignore our demands. While neither candidate for President is willing to represent the will of America's Citizens on any of the substantive issue confronting us, we can still vote in our own self defense. We can turn Congressional incumbents out of office, and elect pro-enforcement candidates to the House and Senate. By changing the balance of power in Congress (their approval ratings are less than half those of George Bush) we can marginalize the damage that either a McCain or an Obama Presidency will cause. If the past two administrations have taught us anything, it's that neither party can be allowed to control both Congress and the White House! Rather than vote for a candidate who has little chance of winning, or even leaving a mark that the parties will remember, it's better that we turn out everyone we possibly can in the House and Senate. Firing as many of these morons as possible will doubtless send the appropriate message, and weaken the stranglehold that business and the Chamber of Commerce have on our Legislators and the Legislation that undermines our way of life!

Virtually every industrialized nation, China, Mexico, Great Britain, and most recently, the European Union, has taken steps to end illegal immigration, and too curtail legal immigration to only that which is prudent, demonstrably necessary, and above all else, in the best interests of their native population! Not surprisingly, Latin American leaders were outraged and began threatening trade and oil sanctions immediately. It's dangerously misguided to suggest that the United States should not follow other industrialized nations in protecting the interests of our native population. It's ridiculous for anyone to suggest that "globalization" requires that a nation supplant it's native population. The entire point of globalization, miserable failure that it is proving to be, was to bring democractic, economic, and social reforms to nations who's chief exports were poverty, it's criminals, it's uneducated, it's excess population! We can hardly expect to help spread democracy or social equity to other nations so long as it remains easier and far more lucrative for their people to take the cowards way out and take advantage of American largess! Better to teach them how to fish than to give them free fish!

Lets be bluntly honest. My comment is for black, white, hispanic, oriental, indian or whatever group of American citizens you belong to. McCain and Obama are two candidates who accept the merger plans of the elite bankers and businesses that control America. This is who these two represent. They want to merge Mexico with the U.S. and have the U.S. citizenry pay for it, for the purpose of cheap labor and subsequently more profits. Period. These two politicians represent the sell-out of the American citizenry. This is the truth whether you are a black, white, oriental, etc. racist, or nationalist, or have any other belief. If you are an American, it's beside the point. YOU ARE GOING TO BE SOLD OUT BY EITHER OF THESE TWO SHILLS. THAT IS THE NAKED TRUTH. Vote for some candidate that the corrupt Main Stream Media doesn't cover, because those are the honest people with your best interests at heart.
