Modern technology may finally solve the mystery of aristocrat’s disappearance

By Stephen Naysmith

Introduction

Nearly three decades after Lord Lucan vanished at the same time as his children’s nanny was brutally murdered, detectives have reopened files on the crime, it was confirmed yesterday. It is hoped that modern crime-fighting technologies such as DNA profiling may help solve the notorious mystery which has remained a source of public fascination despite the passing of the years.

The Disappearance

Richard John Bingham, 7th Earl of Lucan disappeared in November 1974, the day after Sandra Rivett, nanny to his three children, was discovered dead. She had been killed in the basement of the family home in London. The Earl’s car was found abandoned in the Sussex port of Newhaven, and he was later named by an inquest jury as the nanny’s killer, while he was declared dead by the High Court in 1999. It has been suggested that he drowned himself in the English Channel after dumping the car which he had borrowed from a friend. The belief that he was the murderer and that he is now dead are both views shared by his presumed widow Lady Veronica Lucan.

Investigation Reopened

At the inquest, jurors ruled 29-year-old Rivett’s death had been “murder by Lord Lucan” and Westminster Coroner Dr Gavin Thurston issued a warrant citing the absent peer for trial at the Old Bailey. The charge was laid on file until he could be found. Subsequently, the law was changed and English inquest juries no longer have the power to name a murderer.

The review by the Met’s Specialist Crime Directorate is intended to ensure all potential lines of inquiry had been followed, he added: “And to see if any new ones come up as a result of DNA techniques.”

Conspiracy Theories and Sightings

Numerous books have been written about the case, glorying in the combination of the sordid and the glamorous which it encompasses. In the meantime, conspiracy theories and sightings with varying degrees of credibility have added to the mix. Inspector Roy Ranson, who led the murder investigation, argued in his book on the case that Lucan had not killed himself. The detective believed he had instead fled to Africa with the help of friends in high places. Lucan had escaped to Portugal in a friend’s private plane. Further claims placed Lucan in Mozambique in 1975 and later in southern Africa. Last year, former senior Scotland Yard detective Duncan MacLaughlin claimed that Lucan had fled to India where he had lived the rest of his life posing as a hippy known as “Jungly Barry”. MacLaughlin said the Earl had died in Goa in 1996.

Photographs of an elderly man, disheveled with a long beard, were of Lucan in 1991, the former detective said, and bore an undeniable likeness to the earl. However, friends of Barry Haplin, the man in the picture, later insisted he was not the missing lord and was in fact a well-known figure in the 1960s UK folk music scene.
