Original cast furious over Tutti Frutti rerun It’s taken decades to repeat the Bafta award-winning series, but actors say decision to screen it on BBC4 leaves viewers ‘cheated’ IT WAS a comedy classic that amassed a cult following and scooped six Baftas, only to be shelved for two decades. Now, as the BBC finally contemplates Tutti Frutti's return, the original cast members have branded the broadcaster's decision to run it on BBC4 a disgrace.
Described by one cast member as the best series ever made in Scotland, the six-part comedy drama which propelled Robbie Coltrane and Emma Thompson to stardom has been aired just once since it first appeared in 1987.
Scottish writer John Byrne captured a moment in time, charting the fortunes of The Majestics, a Scottish rock band embarking on its silver jubilee tour after the death of lead singer, Big Jazza.
Last month, the BBC suggested it was close to ironing out copyright issues which it claimed had prevented its return, and pencilled in Monday evenings from 10pm on BBC4 as the preferred June slot.
But River City actor Maurice Roeves, who played Majestics guitarist Vincent Diver, called their plans "absolute rubbish". Roeves said: "What's the point of putting it on BBC4 when TV companies are fighting for audiences? Put it on BBC1 and they will get a massive audience. It really does make you wonder what is going on. I try not to think about it because I just get angry and upset.
"I know Channel 4 had wanted to buy it and I just wish Michael Grade had managed. He always said it would be a massive hit on its third showing. It means a lot to folk and they are being cheated."
Stuart McGugan, aka Majestics drummer Bomba MacAteer, believes there should be a monument erected to writer John Byrne. McGugan said: "When the scripts came through my letterbox I took them to bed, and didn't get up until I had read them twice. I was sore because I had been laughing for three hours.
"It is a screaming disgrace they have never been shown again. If they do get them back on, it is clear it will be to encourage people to get Freeview instead of to do the best TV series Scotland has ever made any justice."
However, although BBC4 remains the preferred channel, the June dates have now been scrubbed as problems over music copyright persist.
This latest setback left McGugan far from surprised. He added: "I don't think we will ever see it. The BBC's excuse of the month ran out over a year ago so they started saying they will show it on BBC4 but I think they are lying."
Byrne adapted the series into a stage production which recorded a sell-out tour last year and comes to Glasgow this month. The Paisley-born playwright and painter sought an embargo preventing the BBC from any repeat broadcasts until the tour had reached Glasgow, in the event that the broadcaster tried to cash in on its success.
With no television set at home, Byrne will not see any repeats, should they ever materialise, but isn't too concerned as every minute of footage is emblazoned on his mind. He said: "I will be very happy if it is back on but I will believe it when I see it. I won't be surprised if it doesn't happen given all the dilly dallying. Perhaps someone else could take it off the BBC if they don't want to do it."
Claire Bowers, head of communications at BBC4, said although the channel couldn't confirm the June dates, it was keen to see Tutti Frutti back on TV and stressed that BBC4 - with 70% of the UK population now able to access digital television - was the perfect channel.
She said: "We absolutely do want to show Tutti Frutti on BBC4. BBC4 is a good channel to show international dramas and archive pieces. Believe me, it is not for the want of trying."

Television people are absolute ****, so they are. The BBC are the worst cos they think they have to compete with the rubbish on satellite and ITV. They don't. That's why they get licence money.
They see themselves as playing some great game, crafting schedules, thinking strategically. The last thing they think of is letting people see good TV programmes at times and in ways they want.
I am convinced that whoever is responsible for this crap aboout Tutti Frutti thinks they're doing a good job. But they are just wankers, so up themselves they can't see what people want.

Sorry about the profanity. The bad word I used had five letters and some people wouldn't want to read it in a family newspaper website. But telly people really are a bunch of asterisked asterisking asterisks who think the audience are asterisking asterisks and show their contempt all the asterisking time for us. It makes me want to asterisk my asterisks, so it does.

Why do9es BBC Scotland not show a degree of autonomy by screening Tutti Frutti on terrestrial tv?
I'm sick to death of irrelevant English football matches flooding our evenings.
We should be thankful, I suppose, that the master tapes didn't go the way of those containing the "Vital Spark" episodes from the '70s.

The original viewing figurewer not much to write home about. Whilst a high percentage of the Scottish population watched Tutti Frutti the license payers south of the border did not. BBC4 is the most appropriate channel for the series.

Who cares about this programme? Really? Who gives a hoot, other than the obviously embittered cast?
BBC4: fine, that's where they put repeats these days, isn't it?

I watch quite a lot of stuff on BBC4, but I won't be watching the inflated egos of the cast and writer on my TV if Tutti Frutti ever comes back.
A complete bore of a programme - although maybe it's marginally better than English football...

Maybe I have poor taste - I hate soaps and 'reality' TV. But I thought the idea was to cater for a range of tastes?
I LOVED this show - I think you either 'got it' or you didn't.
So long as they show it somewhere. I'll be happy.
Maybe they could show 'The Slab Boys' again too?
John Byrne is a genius - his paintings, drama and poetry are generally unknown in Scotland - which is Scotland's loss.
I have been hoping for a DVD release of Tutti Frutti for years -
but shows I've loved like The Borgias and Chelmsford 123 never got DVD releases.
Any channel will do for me - so long as I see it.

Yep. There are a lot of people disappearing up their own backsides here. It was a TV programme, guys. It wasn't brilliant, it wasn't bad. Show it, Don't show it. The world might still manage to spin around on its axis either way. Get over it.

Quite apart from the fact that Tutti Frutti was one of the best dramas the BBC has ever made, and therefore really deserves a BBC2 showing or even a BBC1 repeat - it swept the BAFTAs on its original screening - the main reason it's insulting to put it on BBC4 is that the channel was offering actors crummy repeat fees. The sort of money that if you were offered it, you'd laugh bitterly. Emma Thompson, Richard Wilson and Robbie Coltrane are presumably rich enough for this to not make a difference. But Maurice Roeves, Stuart McGugan and John Byrne would probably welcome a bit more dosh.
It's for exactly the same reason of poor pay that Alan Bennett has turned down a BBC4 repeat season. Indeed, the BBC seems embarrassed by BBC4. Apparently, it's not downmarket enough.

There is no other 20 year old tv show that I recall with such love as Tutti Frutti. There is no other 20 year old show that I would travel to Edinburgh to see. And that is no slur on that great city. A stage production and a rerun on TV all of a sudden 2007 looks great.

BBC don't want to repeat TF because it would embarrass them massively. Almost no BBC drama is produced now in Scotland, apart from the appalling River City - and that is only drama by a large stretch of the definition.
Vote for independence and let's start to tell our own stories, and not just the pathetic fables BBC London pretends to originate here.
(By the way, TF does NOT work very well on stage, I am afraid.)

I was lucky enough to record the series on VCR in long play which reduced the quality a bit I have enhanced it by transferring it to DVD though. It was a mastepiece and the stage show is brilliant too I saw it on Friday at the Kings Edinburgh John Byrne has done a wonderful job adapting it. BBC 1 is the place for this show with repeats on BBC 2 so everyone can enjoy the best show to come out Scotland in decades. I often watch it and never get sick of it.

I live well south of the border but loved this programme and have been waiting years to see it again. I check every so often to see whether it's on DVD - hence I found this website. Another gem was Taking Over the Asylum in 1994 - with Ken Stott and David Tennant - would love the chance to see that again.

I have been pressing the BBC to get this brilliant series back out to the viewing public for years. They release the crap like an ever-open outfall pipe but the diamonds have to be fought for. Frankly, if a BBC4 showing is what they are offering now I'll take it. I'll guarantee that the response will have the show mainstreamed in no time. This was quality.

I feel quite disgusted by the attitude of the BBC over Tutti Frutti. How can they fail to repeat this on due to copyright problems. How can they manage to pay £20m for the services of Mr Ross. I think they could treat us with a little respect a detail exactly who or what is the problem. Alex Salmond's recent interest in Scottish Broadcasting (or lack of it) should ask a few questions of why this has not been repeated. Perhaps Hugh Martin from Fife could upload his copy onto a torrent site and stick two fingers up at the BBC. Disgraceful

I am now able to transfer these to DVD (almost certainly illegally !). Anyone interested ? (No payment required). The quality varies from poor (but watchable) to passable.

I was 15 when TF was screened and not many progs since stick in my memory so profoundly. I taped all episodes only for little sister to tape over not long after with an MTV tribute to Michael Jackson - she has since recovered from her injuries. Would love to see repeats - anywhere - but I don't get why it hasn't been released on DVD yet. You can get The Slab Boys now - bought it yesterday, but does anyone have an up to date reason for no TF?
Was lucky enough to be around when the stage version was being produced in Aberdeen and thought it was ace. Wasn't sure how Mr Byrne was going to reduce it down from 6 hours but the man's a genius - fab cast.
No, it's not life and death and yes, the world will keep spinning but I loved it and would like to see it again somewhere/anywhere, please and thank you.
