Salmond out to block Blair from EU presidency Former premier ‘should be disqualified over Iraq’By Paul Hutcheon
Scottish Political Editor FIRST MINISTER Alex Salmond wants Tony Blair to be blocked from becoming the first president of the European
Union.The SNP leader says the
former prime minister should be
"disqualified" from the post because of his staunch support for the Iraq war.
He also said he hoped Scotland would become independent as quickly as possible so he could veto Blair's
candidacy himself.
The post of EU president is likely to be created as a result of the Lisbon treaty being agreed by the union's member states. Blair, who stood down as prime minister last year, has been touted as a potential candidate by allies and is known to have the support of French president Nicolas Sarkozy.
However, the former Labour leader is not thought to have the backing of
German Chancellor Angela Merkel - and the first minister made it clear he will have no support from Edinburgh.
Salmond said: "I'm hoping Scotland will proceed to independence quick enough to have a vote so that we can vote against him. I think Tony Blair would be a deeply controversial figure to be EU president."
He added: "I think he's disqualified his candidacy because of one word, and that word is Iraq."
On the possibility of Blair being stopped, he said: "I have been looking at this question quite closely. It hasn't been done before, so we don't actually know. As far as I can tell, everyone shuts themselves in a room, and a consensus candidate is then meant to emerge. It's a bit like the election of a pope."
He added: "I was told that no-one who wants to be president should allow their candidature to be pre-announced. I thought that was excellent news since the French president had sort of suggested Blair's candidacy. If that disqualifies him then that's excellent."
An aide to Salmond went further, saying: "He hopes Blair is blocked by another member state of the EU."
Blair and Salmond are known to loathe each other after clashing
regularly at Prime Minister's Question Time. Blair was thought to have been incensed by the SNP's stance on the "cash for peerages" affair, while Salmond dislikes Blair because of the Iraq war.
A Labour spokesperson said: "This is typical of Alex Salmond's narrow-minded approach."
Meanwhile, Salmond used a briefing with Sunday newspapers last week to outline plans for a US-style overhaul of the way Scotland is governed. The new approach will be based on the Virginia model, focusing on outcomes such as the way that the economy and health service is performing.
"For the next three years you haven't seen anything yet in terms of transforming Scotland," Salmond said.
"We're prepared to measure ourselves against the best, not against the mediocre. It's a whole different relationship in the way that government has been operating in Scotland."
As the nationalists celebrated their first year in power, they also hit their highest ever poll rating.
The TNS/System Three poll shows a 14% lead for the SNP over Labour in Scotland, with a record high of 45%.

Splendid article. Extra large portion of sour grapes for the anonymous Labour spokesperson.
The only danger is that now Berlusconi is out of jail and back in power in Italy means that the two right wing fascist nutjobs in France and Italy might no form a pact to defeat Merkel.
Blair said, "Let history judge me." We should ignore him until history posthumously judges him.

Salmond is right , of course. A Blair candidacy is impossible because of Iraq. That is a pity because apart from starting illegal wars he had many fine qualities for such a job.
How many seats would the SNP win with that sort of lead of 14%? This should send as many alarm bells ringing as the debacle in thye South.
A well connected Labour pal told me tonight that his MP had phoned him to say that only an ABC tactic would save Scottish Labour.
Get rid of Alexander - A
Get rid of Brown - B
Hold a Constitutional referendum -C
and shoot the nationalist fox before Salmond becomes unstoppable!

Blair as President of the EU would be a disaster. Unless they want Bush's ex poodle after the owner has got the chop!
I can't imagine anyone worse nor anyone who has more contempt for international law, human rights and EU treaties.
Blair is a failure. He has destroyed the Labour party (Brown is the patsy but it was Blair who finally sold their soul to the Tories) and his decision to back Bush on Iraq was a major blunder which has cost the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. By giving Bush a fig leaf of international support Blair made the invasion possible.
His Government regularly showed contempt for the European Charter of Human Rights.
[bold]Why on earth would the EU want a man who does not share their values to be their leader?[/bold]
If they want to make the EU unpopular on a worldwide basis then Blair is the right man for the job, otherwise pick someone else.

Blair as President of the EU? Surely you jest!
Why isn't this war criminal and pathological liar not occupying a very small cell in the Hague for the crimes against humanity he is responsible for with respect to Iraq? Surely the world has seen enough of this fake "leader", who, together with his fellow war criminal, GW Bush, are responsible for the deaths of over a million Iraqis, the destruction of Iraq's infrastructure, and the theft of its resources. In case anyone is paying attention, the "war" (it was not a "war", it was a supreme war crime)was carried out under blatant lies and more lies.
I guess Blair is hoping the EU nations and the rest of the world has short memories. Not a chance!
Thank heavens there is an Alex Salmond with the courage to speak out against such a possible tavestry.
As for the Labour "spokesperson" accusing Mr. Salmond of being "narrow minded", surely it is preferable to face allegations of "narrow mindedness" than to defend charges of war crimes.
Bravo, Mr. Salmond. Far too many war criminals are out and about, the blood of innocents on their hands, and receiving top appointments. Blair has caused enough death and destruction in the world already. The EU can surely do better. If it can't, then it has zero credibility and deserves to be dismantled.

Bliar should not even be considered for the job as President of the EU. He is a liar and a war criminal. He should, instead, be taken to The Hague for trial; along with Bush and Broon.

If Blair were to become president it would be detrimental to Scotland's prospects for independence. Blair has no love for Alex Salmond and he would stick the boot in whenever he could. No, we need a President from another EU country. We would expect him/her to be much fairer minded in dealings with Scotland.

If that liar Blair becomes president of the EU, I hope an independent Scotland pulls out!
Surely noone in their right mind would want this warmongering ,lying , greedy toad as president?
And his missus would be there too!
Two reasons for blocking him!
Whoever set him up as Peace Envoy to the Middle East , was probably hoping that he would be unable to dodge the bullets.
Just where were all those self respecting Arabs with AK 47s?

The Constitutional Commission is a dead duck and a waste of time. There is no chance for them to conclude anything before the next GE, so why bother with it. It's whole purpose is to get the people of Scotland to buy into it and delay progress. It has nothing to do with the majority who voted SNP and who support the SNP Scottish Government. We will decide our own future, not a bunch of Labour dinosaurs trying to cling onto power.

The newly created position for president of the European Union Council of Ministers is due to commence as of January 2009, and even though an announcement has not as yet been officially made as to just who is going to fulfill that role, expect an announcement to be made relative to that matter no later than of December of this year. Thus far, retired British Prime Minister Tony Blair is the forerunner, or the hot favourite, to fulfill that role. However, whoever is appointed to that role will be the Biblical Antichrist, and that will be clarified by his confirmation of a seven year Middle East peace treaty very shortly after having received his crown as the full time president of the EU very early on in the new year. For the confirmation of the seven year Middle East treaty please read Revelation Chapter 6, Verse 2 And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer. Also note well Daniel Chapter 9, Verse 27: And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate. Both quotations are taken from the only true and accurate version of the Bible the King James Version.
Relative to that assumption that the retired British Prime Minister is the Beast of Revelation by his appointment as the full time European Union Council of Ministers president there are going to be some that are going to find my comments on this website informative and helpful in the complete understanding of the Bible prophecies. Nonetheless, there may be others that are going to totally disagree with everything that I have put onto the site thus far; On the other hand, there may be some students of Bible prophecy that are going to find my remarks not only out of order, but completely out of perspective comparative to what to how the scriptures identify the Antichrist. After all, everyone is entitled to his or her own viewpoints one way or another, and from the readers of this site I would expect nothing more or less.
(As yet, there has not as yet been an official announcement made as to just who is to fulfill the role of the European Union Council of Ministers, and that being the case we cannot say for certain just who the Antichrist is? Therefore, we cannot state with an absolute certainty that Blair is the Antichrist up until that official announcement has been made relative to just who is going to fulfill the role the European Union Council of Ministers, and more or less everything that is said thus far relative to the correct identity of the Antichrist will be nothing more than a mild form of conjecture; that is, up until the end of this year when that official announcement has been made, all of the aforesaid has been mentioned at the beginning of this article.)
Nonetheless, there are two perspectives to consider relative to the supposition that Blair is the Beast of Revelation. The first one is that Blair is the Antichrist - and that even know he is beginning to fulfill a true Antichrist agenda, see the other articles in this site relative to supposition that Blair is the Beast. The other is that even though Blair is not the Antichrist, he is paving the way for the real Beast of Revelation to be revealed by the end of this year, by this as yet unknown person who will be officially appointed as the president of the European Union Council of Ministers. However, with a constant reference right throughout the Holy Scriptures themselves to the Beast being a lion, or a person of British descent, in the light of both of these suggestions there can be no doubts whatsoever that the Antichrist is going to come out of Britain, and that if is not Blair then to be certain the Beast is going to come out of the house of Windsor, or the British Royal Family: Proof, proof you may say, look no further than Psalm 91 of the King James Version, Verses 13 and 14. Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.
Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name…? In this instance, the terminology of the word lion is mentioned twice, with the inference being that the young lion refers to the Antichrist, with the common knowledge being that the serpent refers to Satan. Subsequently, there are also no doubts that verse 14 refers to the Rapture of the Church.
Yet, in the chronological sense of being young as we know it on this day and in the instance of both Tony Blair and Charles Windsor neither would fit into the category of what one would consider being young. Therefore, with the interpretation of King James Version of Psalm 91 we are faced with a dilemma in the sense of the Antichrist is described as being a young lion when neither of the two aforementioned possible candidates fitting into the area of what most people would generally consider to be young; that is, a person under the age of say thirty years? Although in the time that the Bible was handed down to the angels to be delivered over to the prophets to be written down, middle age may have been considered to be young, that, in an age when some of the Biblical prophets lived for hundreds of years? However, even though I do not consider him personally to be the Antichrist, if we are looking for a young lion in the sense of how we know young to be in this day and age, then look no further than William (Prince William) Windsor.
As I had made mention of above at the beginning of this article - With Tony Blair still being the favourite to be appointed as The full time EU president, and he still being the leading proponent of Middle East peace as he heads the international quartet of four, Russia, the United States, the European Union, and the United Nations, there is now more news that is beginning to emerge of a seven year Middle East peace treaty being confirmed by the newly appointed president of the EU, thereby fulfilling the prophecies of Daniel Chapter 9, Verse 27, now read on:
BERLIN (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel and peace envoy Tony Blair will jointly organise a Middle East peace conference to be held at the beginning of June in Berlin, German daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) reported on Friday.
All European Union members, several Arab states, the Middle East quartet of Russia, the United States, the European Union and the United Nations, and Palestinian and Israeli officials will be invited to the talks, the paper said, without identifying the source of its information.
The aim of the meeting, which will be at the level of foreign ministers, will be to push forward the peace process and prepare Palestinians to take over responsibility for their own state, the paper added, in a preview of its Saturday edition.
German government officials could not immediately be contacted for comment.
U.S.-backed peace talks launched in November have been bogged down by tensions over Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank, Israel's reluctance to remove checkpoints and an upsurge in violence between the two sides.
The Sueddeutsche Zeitung said officials meeting in Berlin will discuss building up the Palestinian police force and the development of the legal system and justice apparatus.
Nations including Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates would play an important role at the talks and Israeli and Palestinian officials had already pledged to attend.
Merkel becomes the first German chancellor to address Israel's parliament next week.
Her three-day trip, starting on Sunday, marks the 60th anniversary of the creation of the Jewish state in 1948.
BRUSSELS, March 25 (Xinhua) -- Middle East Quartet envoy Tony Blair on Tuesday asked for a new strategy for the Gaza Strip, which is controlled by the militant group Hamas.
"If we have learnt anything from the past few months, it is that the present strategy for Gaza is not working," Blair told the European Parliament Middle East working group.
He said what is needed is a strategy that isolates the extremists and helps the people in Gaza. But the current situation shows that the opposite is true.
He said substantial flow of goods and resources to Gaza and outside of it should be made possible so that the humanitarian plight in Gaza can be eased.
Blair also wanted confidence-building measures from Israel in the West Bank, which is controlled by the moderate Fatah movement.
At the same time, he emphasized the need to significantly upgrade the security capability of the Palestinian Authority so that it can impose order in the Palestinian territories.
He argued that by improving the Palestinian security capability for Israel on the one hand and easing the burden of Israeli occupation on the other, both Israeli and Palestinian leaders can pass "the minimum credibility threshold" to persuade their peoples that a "two-state" solution is viable.
He said the essence of the issue is a "credibility gap" between people's aspirations for a "two-state" solution and the reality they face on the ground.
Blair warned that time is running out. "We need to be aware of the fact that we are racing against time." He said the situation must improve by the time U.S. President George W. Bush visits the Middle East in mid-May. "This is decision-making time as to whether people are serious about moving the process forward or not," he said. The Middle East Quartet is made up of the European Union, Russia, the United Nations and the United States.
