Cover is blown on LibDems
Iain Macwhirter

NEWSPAPER EDITORS and readers have reacted angrily this weekend to the lifting of the media blackout on Nicol Stephen. A voluntary understanding between the media and the voters had led to news outlets observing an almost complete silence on the Liberal Democrat leader since his party lost power in the Scottish elections last May.

It's feared that following his "outing", Stephen could become a "bullet magnet" for political enemies.

Already opposition parties are saying that he is a total liability and that he shouldn't be let out alone. An internet website, thought to be linked to the Scottish Liberal Democrats, broke the news that Stephen was going to go into action on the front line at the party conference in Aviemore this weekend.

In his first interview since the reporting ban was lifted, Stephen said: "It's very nice to be sort of a normal person for once. I think it's about as normal as I'm going to get."

He went on: "Lucky there's no civilians around here because it's a no man's land. If I go up north, I have to keep my face slightly covered on the off chance someone will recognise me."

Away from the public eye, the LibDem leader has in recent months seen frontline action on a number of fronts. Skirmishing at first minister's question time, Stephen has been hitting the nationalist forces of Mullah S'al-mond where it hurts, using live ammunition. However, because of the blackout, this has received zero coverage in the press.

It is claimed that, in the autumn, Stephen led his troops into a major offensive in the hotly disputed Trumpland province in the badlands of the Northeast. However, after initial success, it appears that this offensive was beaten back by nationalist forces supported by local tribes who wanted to increase their income from the lucrative international trade in the illegal drug of "golf".

Stephen's forces are now thought to control less than 10% of the country.

Stephen has also attempted to reconstruct an alliance with forces loyal to the opposition leader Wendi al-Xandr.

His supporters have agreed to participate in the setting up of a new power-sharing constitutional convention. However, this received a set-back when Wendi al-Xandr's foreign backers insisted that the convention was a means of taking powers away from al-Xandr's militias and have now targeted Stephen and hope to destroy him politically, now he is out in the open.

A spokesman for the Society of Editors said that he was "very disappointed"

that a website had broken the voluntary agreement not to report anything about the Scottish Liberal Democrats.

"This is in stark contrast to the highly responsible attitude of the UK print and broadcast media as a whole who have entered into an understanding over coverage of Stephen," said one editor. Normal disservice will be resumed at the earliest opportunity.

Thing is, Stephen just needs to say 'SNP and Sleaze' in the same sentence and there is a picture of him and a headline.

Nearly funny though.

I'd have been funnier.

Good one Iain, but why was the blackout agreed in the 1st place.

The guys a joke, he has his nose so far up slabs @rze his statements reguarding sleaze and the smelling there of, it should have been pointed out by the press that what he was smelling and clearly swallowing was all comming from the slab bench's and @rze's

Iain,

yes very good.

Seriously, I detect that the Liberals are starting to distance themselves from Labour. They are going to have to discover a backbone if they want to survive politically in Scotland. Constantly attacking the SNP is not terribly clever. The local income tax issue is an obvious area of cooperation. The Liberals need to learn to compromise with the SNP in the same way they did with Labour.

Sitting in the huff is not too clever.

Great wee Sketch, especially the opening gambit.

Nichol is at least manoeuvring the Liberals away from the wreckage that is Labour, it's only taken him 10 Months - not exactly dynamic oor Nichol.......

The only problem is, where is he manoeuvring them - he states that they are in a key position from which to gain from Labour - possibly so at Local Council Level but I just can't see it at the Scottish or UK level......both Nichol and Clegg are seriously weak leaders who do no command confidence and I fear fro Nichol, this mean a continual demise into obscurity......

The public and their supporters will judge them on the key issues that Nochol raises, namely support for the Local Income tax (and at what cost) and their performance and ACTIOn in the Constitutional Commission - The Liberals have basically used this a as a vehicle to deliver the Steel Report recommendations - Their announcement to resurrect lazurus..sorry erm...David Steele........ seems more than a little late and only betrays their own panic on this matter.

Surely a move as substantial as the Liberals are proposing, namely the extension of tax raising and fiscal powers to Holyrood requires a Referendum - it is no 'technical matter' (the excuse given for not allowing one on the Lisbon Treaty).......

To date Nichol Stephen refuses to countenance a Referendum on this issue.....IT'S TIME the Liberal's dropped the democrat part from their r name and call themselves New Conservatives......

Well clegg has obviously given nicol a kick in the bahookie, Until clegg took over he was all doomsayer SNP = death for scotland, salmond smells of sleaze and whitewash wendy smells of roses.

Now we'll vote with snp for removal of graduate tax and ask them to let us into a discussion on LIT, didnt want to discuss anything at all on the budget a few weeks ago.

Its obvious (to anyone with half a brain)that Nicol is not really leading the Scottish liberal democrats hes merely their leader.
Posted by: old bejant, Argyll on 2:13pm Sun 2 Mar 08
Its also interesting that the media are for the first time since May taking pot-shots at Nicol the day after he distances himself from Labour, refuses to give powers back to westmonster, allies himself with the Nats on graduate tax and LIT. Its very interesting indeed, although being the two faced, indecicive idiot he is he does deserve it, anyone smell sleaze ?

JC,

Macwhirter used to be a Blair fan, he admits it himself. Then over a year ago he was a Brown fan believing he would right all Blair's wrongs. He has now seen Brown for what he is.

He is very slowly coming over to the SNP. We all see the light eventually if we have Scotland's best interests at heart.

I think watching the evolution of Iain Mcwhirter is fascinating, a lot of us have walked similar roads in the past. Plus the guy's got a great sense of humour and is not remotely stuffy or big headed.

Very amusing Iain though I must say that although not Churchillian Nicol's speech in Aviemore was far more lively and got a far greater response from the audience than his 'leader' Mr Clegg.
Posted by: Galen Milne, Dunblane on 9:10pm Sun 2 Mar 08
Once again Iain MacWhirter's rather cheap shots reflect on his own inability to relfect upon serious issues confronting Scottish politics at this juncture. he should be reviewing the position each of the main aprties have on the debate relating to the UK constitution. The only serious attempt (leaving aside the contrived SNP conversation) is the Steel Commission report presented in 2006 at the Scottish Lib Dem conference. I doubt MacWhirter has read it but if he did he obvioulsy doesn't understand it and therefore finds it hard to report on it.

Would you like to explain why the Lib-Dems are in favour of a referendum on EU but not on Scottish independence then?

As I understand matters the Liberals are in a discussion (Commission/working party/whatevewr?) with two other parties which have excluded the policy of the Scots Government. I'd call that contrived acrtually.

I'm afraid I can't get too excited with anything David Steele comes up with. He's a yesterday's man (Dewar/Robertson/Wri
ght generation).

Nice conundrum the Unionists are in.How do you preserve the waning union without appearing anti Scottish.
Form another committee and hope the problem goes away?
Delay the election to the last possible minute to hang onto power?
Much easier for the SNP as they don't have to face both directions at once.

I'll take him seriously, when he takes his job seriously. I did however find extremely amusing your comment about seeing the light. Somehow I doubt the nats have anyones best interests at heart apart from themselves. broken election pledges, token gestures, no long term strategy

And labour's long term strategy?

1. collect the dna of everyone in the UK
2. impose biometric id cards on everyone in the UK
3. have everyone in the UK spy on everyone in the UK

Oh how the mighty have fallen!

Just a "doubt." It's normal for pretendy Unionists to be certain.

Another "doubter." And a patronising one of the first order.

I don't know what Iain MacWhirter's politics are but he seems to be the only Scottish journalist who is reasonably even-handed. He's certainly not a rabid Labour-lover like Douglas Flaser, Eddie Barnes, Alf Young
et al or if he his he at least appears to be impartial.
