Let the train take the strain
McCHATTER: Iain Macwhirter

ACCORDING TO Lord George Foulkes, the Labour MSP, we are being "brainwashed" by nationalism on wheels. The Scottish government's plan to repaint ScotRail and SPT trains with a uniform Saltire livery is "nationalism by creep" says the overwrought Labour spokesman and Hearts supporter. It's a totalitarian act straight out of Orwell's 1984.

Every time an innocent unionist Scot boards one of these vehicles of psychological disorientation, they will enter a state of existential unease, while subtle messages are implanted by nationalist thought police. Passengers will emerge at their destinations as fully fledged nationalists, complete with kilt and claymore, ready to slaughter the first Englishman they encounter.

But at least it will give people something to do while they wait, stationary in their delayed carriages, somewhere in the Scottish wilderness. "Eh, we apologise to passengers for this slight delay, eh, in our destination scheduling, but, eh, this is owing to a severe case of leaves on the line at Croy. In the meantime, why don't you vote SNP at the next election, like."

You can imagine the response: irate passengers leaping out of the carriages in anger, burning the nearest saltires.

As anyone who knows anything about brainwashing will tell you, the repainting plot clearly had nothing to do with promoting nationalism - it was really about undermining it. The livery is repainted every three years and the plans to alter the colour scheme actually predates the election of the SNP government.

The colour scheme was clearly a unionist plot to turn people against anything to do with an independent Scotland. What better way to alienate Scots from their national flag than to brand it with one of the most loathed commercial organisations on the planet? Every time a train is late, or the toilets are overflowing, or you can't get a seat, or there is no train at all, or you pay a ludicrous £17 just to travel 35 miles to the Edinburgh festivals you will now think of Scotland's national standard. Forget the National Conversation, this is enough to make anyone see the downside of independence if ScotRail is to be the emblem of the new Scotland.

If the SNP government were even half-sensible about brainwashing they would repaint the carriages with huge Union flags and crosses of St George, then sit back and watch the voting figures as people vent their fury against the unionist rolling stock. Perhaps they could start with the buses and those stupid Edinburgh trams instead.

My train of thought exactly: repainting the livery will make less difference than making the trains run on time. However, his ineffable grandness the ignoble Lord Foulkes is clearly afraid of and averse to symbols of Scottish nationhood to such an extent that he cannot perceive this. Personally, I cannot conceive of ever being wary of symbols of Scottish nationhood myself. But then, unlike his grand ineffableness, I am merely a Scot rather than a bastion of the UK Establishment.

But will the Angus Council allow these trains to travel thru the county,

After all its their policy to remove the Saltire from all public buildings.

I listened to George Foulkes being 'interviewed' on Friday morning on Radio Scotland. Between the interviewer and Mr Foulkes I couldn't really say who was the poorer performer. What is Radio Scotland coming to producing programmes of such dreadful quality. It was insulting to the people who took the trouble to phone in.

I guess that rabid drunken clown Fookes will object to the colour of the Sky on the grounds that it will incite people to whatever.

Perhaps he will also write to David Murray and ask him to have Rangers drop the Blue and the Union Jack from its symbolism - especially as the Union Jack does contain within it the saltire!

Or will he be rabidly lambasting John Reid and Celtic footbal club for its use of the word celtic and its obvious "Scottish" conotations.

Aye the colour blue and any institution that chooses to fly the saltire are all part of an obviously dark SNP plot!Even the original designers of the Union Jack!

"Transport Scotland, whose own logo was inspired by the Saltire, stressed work on the new train design had started before the SNP came to power last year."

From The Telegraphs' Alan Cochrane :

"Meanwhile, and in another pathetic example of Scottish Labour’s malaise at present, Lord Foulkes, one of their more prominent MSPs, has complained about ScotRail’s plans to paint their wagons with Saltire emblems.

This experienced politician and former minister — who should know better — reckons this is part of a dastardly SNP plot to hasten the advent of independence. What absolute rubbish.

The Saltire is Scotland’s flag — not the SNP’s — and if Lord Foulkes doesn’t know that he should remove himself from the frontline of national politics as gracefully as he can."

So when even Alan Cochrane takes
Foulkes to task it must be bad.
Interestingly AM2 was one of the few
people to side with Lord Foulkes and seemed
to also see a dastardly plot underway
yet again -
"Yes, the SNP’s cynical “gradualist” agenda will have been at work here."
see - tinyurl.com/5dnlry
This dynamic duo appear
to be the lunatic fringe of the Unionist
where they see a nationalist conspiracy
around every corner. That said we do
appreciate their help in supporting
their nationalist cause - if they
keep this up even Mr Cochrane will
be joining the SNP :)

Since we are talking about mad Foulkes here
is an amusing little ditty in case you
have not seen it yet.

see - tinyurl.com/5ze62t

Also Foulkes partner on the lunatic fringe
AM2 appears to have been somewhat active
of late posting his own website
www.scottishunionist
.com. He came under
some constructive criticism and
seemed to get very defensive -

see - tinyurl.com/6ajb39 (or at least
the RSS since of course AM2 had many
of the posts removed). However to get
a gist here you go -

Being an open minded sort of Cybernat
I thought I would check it out.

In any case I wonder if this site would
be of any interest, but apparently not
it just looks like some reformatting of
AM2's own comments - is the Scottish Unionist
(singular I note) AM2 ?

So one of the promises of the site is
"if you want to reply here, you'll find that I don't filter comments", but interestingly when
I posted some information I was threatened with

"I can only let it stand or delete it completely"
- personally I would have thought that deletion
was filtering, but who I am to argue.
The other feedback I got was
"please don't paste huge sections of copyright material". Interesting that all of the articles
themselves are full of cut and paste copyright
material but commenting
with relevant cut & paste (and incidentally less cut and paste than the article
itself) are threatened
with removal and I assume by mentioning
copyright potentially legal recourse ?

Apparently www.scottishunionist
.com would
appear to be another example of Unionist
hypocrisy and spin - Democracy British Style,
who needs it ? Foulkes and AM2 appear to be
well matched with their paranoia of seeing
racism and conspiracy around every corner.

Other posters then criticized his bogus
registration information which included
the postal code for the Caledonian Hotel
- EH1 2AB, and a made up phone number.

To this AM2 appeared to get very upset
and told us to "desist" and
"The registrar has my information, as per the agreement. I've checked."

So apparently AM2 is in residence at
the Caledonian Hotel - I do hope they
don't fly a Saltire or there might
be some trouble :)

Labour prefers to fly to London with Union Jack tails. BA, Heathrow, Stanstead and all the London gravy stations are their religious shrines.

aye well I think it shouldn't be too much of a strain for the train to take gorgeuous george south to be with his soulmates in London and to keep him there.

I did have a wee chuckle at the name scottishunionist since it has hun at its centre.

I had a similar chuckle at the Royal Society of Edinburgh when their emails used to be sombody@rse.co.uk. They seemed to have changed it the last time I saw a letter from them.

i've just spluttered juice all over my keyboard laughing at that @rse email lol.

Lord George has clearly lost it hasn't he? perhaps we should adopt the english rose for everything (like the so called 'scottish' labour party has, not that there is a scottish labour party) We can paint all our trains with that and make the national side wear one like the english wouldn't that be much better eh george non of all this offensive scottish stuff?? Such a typical brit thing to do, try to iradicate all sense of national pride and cultural identity. The bagpipes will be getting banned next (blaming it on eu health and safety laws)

To paraphrase Hendrix, "George FFFFoulkes, what is he good for.....absolutely nothing". Not unless you want a bit of unconscious comedy, mans a caricature of a ballon.

I'm still wondering where George Foulkes acquired his Scottish accent. He was born and educated in England and few acquire other accents once they're past senior school.

By George its Foulkes, the English Lord;
Found on a London pavement, drunk as a skunk;
who is he to deride our flag,
his union jack is Cumberlands rag.

What a laugh seeing Screaming Lord Fowkes barfing on about "nationalism by creep" - preferable to "Labourite Creeps" anyday of the week - when his lot named everything they could after their party's members they could when in power.

We still see the locomotive named after Donald Dewer pulling in at Glasgow Central regularly, a fitting tribute as it frequently has faults but the tannoy spokesman blames everything else for the problems except for it!

And of course there's McMaster Sports Centre in Johnstone...a long running joke with the locals that it should be named after someone never known to have done a minutes's exercise after his last PE lesson in school decades earlier. With any justice, the creation of new facilities will mean the entire complex being named after the man who donated the land for leisure in the first place - Thomas Shanks - and that Labourite's name confined to the dustbin of history where it belongs.
