Drug Hangout Set for Art Revamp

An art collective will this week unveil their conversion plans for a former drugs blackspot in the heart of Glasgow's Gorbals. The work by Heisenberg, the Glasgow-based public art collective, is part of the second phase of the Gorbals regeneration.

Creating a Meadow on the Banks of the Clyde

New York artist Aleksandra Mir has been commissioned to create a meadow on the banks of the Clyde. The meadow, due to be completed in 2003/2004, will be built by local people on derelict land between the King's Bridge and the Suspension Bridge.

Unveiling the Plans

Heisenberg, alongside the artists they have commissioned, will display their plans for the area at an exhibition at Glasgow's Lighthouse design centre next weekend. The exhibition will showcase photographs, films, and samples of material taken from the abandoned shops and flats in the Queen Elizabeth shopping arcade.

Sculptures Celebrating Women

Ken Hunter, Amanda Currie, and David Ralston are among the artists contributing to the Gorbals revitalization project. Hunter plans to create a sculpture of a Gorbals woman, aiming to provide representation that goes beyond allegorical or historical figures. Meanwhile, Ralston's contribution will involve the creation of mechanical birds that hang above doorways, triggering movements and potentially generating numbers for various purposes. Currie is focusing on community engagement and is working with residents to devise an annual ritual of crowning a new 'king'.

Revitalizing Communities

The Gorbals regeneration project, spearheaded by Heisenberg and an array of talented artists, highlights the power of art in transforming communities. By repurposing former drug hotspots and engaging with local residents, the project aims to bring new life to the heart of Glasgow.

Looking Ahead

The plans for the Gorbals area provide an exciting glimpse into the future of Glasgow's urban revitalization. With the involvement of renowned artists and the collaborative efforts of the community, Queen Elizabeth square is set to become a vibrant and culturally rich hub for locals and visitors alike.
