At last ... a robot that really can think

IT cooks, cleans and washes your windows at the touch of a button -- and even matures with age. Thinking robots that evolve like humans could soon be fact rather than fiction, thanks to a group of Scottish scientists set to develop the world's first real-life R2-D2.

Until now, scientists have attempted to create thinking robots by installing a complex processing network but the systems have failed to operate autonomously in advanced tasks. The new technique, however, allows the robot to evolve in a developing environment, enabling it to become more complex and sophisticated over time, like humans.

Having 'grown' robots in the laboratory for eight years, scientists at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen claim they have invented a robot that will radically change our everyday lives. Within 15 years we could be spared the time and effort involved in daily household chores thanks to a robot handyman.

'You could leave the house in the morning and the robot would have vacuumed the whole house by the time you get back,' said Dr Christopher MacLeod, who is leading the research. 'It could do all the tasks around the house that you hate doing. The possibilities are huge.'

Current models can wash windows, mow the lawn, or even operate as artificial limbs. They could also replace humans in the event of an earthquake or dangerous levels of radiation and perform exploratory tasks underwater. Although the robots currently under development have the powers only to see and touch, Dr MacLeod says it is only a matter of time and investment before they can also hear and speak.

'Our robot is made up of neural processors, like the over 100 billion neural processors in our brain,' he said. 'On their own, they can perform only the simplest functions but put together they can form a complex robot. So whereas our brains are limited by size, with enough computer power there is no reason why these robots could not have the intellectual capacity of a whole nation or planet.'

We are on the cusp of a huge tidal wave of artificial intelligence. It could be about to take off in the same way as the internet did a few years ago. Dr MacLeod admits the system could be dangerous in the wrong hands.

'The system is open to abuse, and I would be concerned about the consequences if the military got hold of it,' he said. 'Because it works according to an evolutionary principle, you can train it to carry out specific functions -- even dangerous ones. Nature is blind, and whether we use it for good or ill depends on us and human nature.'
